Last Minute Holidays

Okay, okay... so the boss made you stay late for a week, your partner is grumpy about missing out on that new jumper/job/last bit of marmalade and the dog has done something unforgivable on the carpet. Best you forget it all with ... a last minute holiday!

Just picture, if you will, a sunny little island in the Med, a beautiful old European city like Bruges or party central Berlin. You are centre stage; lazing away the day in the Greek sun, swanning about canals and old churches, or pounding it hard at 4am in Berghain.

Last minute holidays are your cure all, your magic carpet ride out of here, your way to get through the next six months! Last minute holidays help pick you up, let you get down, let you soak up something quite different to the daily hum drum. You owe it to yourself and your partner to have a break - and hey, it's too long to wait for next summer's big hol!

Sunshine, history, a little touring, just a big night out and time to recover - the content is up to you, the choices are easy to find, and the paying is easy! (You'll be amazed at how little a short break can cost!)

You can venture as far afield as you like; all the major cities are just a couple of hours away at most and the beaches and the sun of the Med are easily done for a three or four day break. Do something different like Krakow (quite extraordinary history, excellent food and some brilliant day tours through the old city).

Venture somewhere exotic like Marrakech. The souks and late night market square are an amazingly cosmopolitan adventure with brilliant food, whirling dervishes and all the excitement of a brush with the Arabian nights.

Paris is a city for lovers and it is just delightful right now. The bulk of the tourists have left and the city's prices are returning to normal. The temperatures make for easy walking about. The queues at the Louvre are dying down and Montmartre is as beautiful as ever.

Consider somewhere like Venice, Rome or Florence. You only need three or four days to get a taste of vibrant Italy (although time spent in Florence is never a waste!) and you can experience them at their best right now. Venice is exquisite and a bit of a splurge here is well worth it - venture to St Marks, watch the glassblowers and travel a canal or two - if only to tell your grandkids you did it before the sea swallowed the place!

Rome. Ah Rome. When you're sick of Rome you're sick of life! Dine in a different trattoria morning, noon and night; wander the Coliseum and explore the Vatican boundaries. Do a quick Dan Brown tour!

Florence is just wonderful in autumn! Charming people and so much to see. Yet, the best of it is seen by pointing your feet out the door of your pensione and just going. Every street is an adventure, you'll never die for lack of food and the history of the place will astonish you. Florence's most famous square is Piazza della Signoria, Il Duomo was begun in 1296, consecrated in 1436, and holds 20,000 people. The Ponte Vecchio was built in 1345 and is still lined with shops selling jewellery.

Take our word for it - you need a last minute holiday, even two!
