The Seychelles are south of Sri Lanka and are under direct threat of being swamped should the climate continue to warm. If you want to see rare beauty in a pristine spot thousands of kilometres from the nearest landfall, the Seychelles will live up to your expectations. North of the Seychelles lies one of the most delightful countries in Asia. Sri Lanka, the fabled Ceylon, home to tea plantations, exotic scenery, historic legends and fabulous beaches. The Indian Ocean boasts many treasures; Sri Lanka is one. The civil war has ended and Sri Lanka is desperate to rebuild its tourist reputation. South of the capital of Colombo lies Hikkaduwa, one of the prettiest beaches on the coast. Think arching palm tress sheltering a white sandy beach. This small fishing village contains many guest houses and a few hotels. Further south is Galle, the fort town guarding the southern ocean. The history and tragedy of the city is inspiring and you'll love the beaches, the fort itself and the many monuments in the city.
Further to the east is the Yala National Park where you can go on genuine safari and shoot leopards, tigers, antelope and elephants, then download all the pics into a photo book when you get home. In the middle of the country is a tiny town called Kandy which boasts unique festivals and a surfeit of historic sites. If you like tea, head for the hills to Nuwara Eliya. Rolling hills are carpeted in verdant Ceylon tea bushes. Steep gorges, roiling clouds and lush valleys greet you around every corner. And if you're lucky enough to find the Grand Hotel, do stop for high tea! It's an experience you'll not find anywhere else!
Also inland is the famed Adam's Peak. Supposedly where Adam left his footprint on the earth, and where you can climb one of Sri Lanka's highest peaks to see the sun rise. The climb is stairs all the way up and it's best to start before dawn and get there in time to see one of the world's great sunrise views.
Madagascar is home to some of the most incredible wildlife on earth. This unique, mountainous country is something special - not only because of the incredible critters, but because the French left a love of food and cooking when they left and the resulting mix of Malagasy style and French technique is outstanding. Mother Nature beckons in this place so your holiday will be about the beach and the backcountry. Mount up for a safari Malagasy style and explore Lac Alaotra, the country's biggest lake. You'll find grey bamboo lemurs and much more here in an experience you won't forget in a hurry.
Wildlife features in many of Madagascar's attractions and if you're in Fort Dauphin make sure you experience one of the Lemur tours while you're there. The local guides take you further than you can manage on your own and they'll keep you safe too! If you need your beach fix, Lokaro is the best of the local beaches - unspoilt and untouched.
Ambohimanga is a world heritage site about 45 mins drive from the town of Tana and is the former royal capital of Madagascar. The ruins and the buildings that still stand give a flavour of the Kings and Queens of the local people. You can wander around and go into many of the buildings. The scenery and views out along the valley are excellent and the visit may be a welcome respite from all that wildlife!
The Lokobe Nature Special Reserve is where you'll see most of the wildlife including the Lemurs, monkeys, snakes, chameleons and more. Local guides make the visit much more interesting. Eat locally and you'll also enjoy the spicy stew, which consists of fish and shellfish and plenty of spice!
North of Madagascar are the islands of Reunion and Mauritius. When writers talk about paradise, this is what they have in mind. Calm waters, pristine beaches, palm-fringed shores and friendly people who know how to cook! Mauritius has so many delightful places to visit, it's hard to know where to begin... but let's start at Ile des Deax Cocos. A small private island that entertains day visitors with champagne on arrival and hammocks by the score. You'll swim with dolphins, snorkel out to the reef just metres from the shore and enjoy a huge barbecue with prawns the size of lobsters that night.
Tired of the beach? Hit the horse trails inland and ride to Rochester Falls. The cliff top trails are scary, but awesome and the scenery as you head inland is outstanding. Also inland are the Tamarin waterfalls in Quatre Bones. Only accessible by 4-wheel drive, it's an exciting and inspiring day out, with an up close look at the Mauritian bush and wildlife.
